Afterworld Paradox
Afterworld is developed by Paradox Development Studio and published by Paradox Interactive. It is a new post-apocalyptic survival grand strategy game from the internal studio known for Crusader Kings III and Hearts of Iron IV. Paradox announced it on August 25, 2026 as the studio's first original setting in a decade.
Developer and publisher
Paradox Development Studio is the credited developer, while Paradox Interactive handles publishing. Game director Dan Lind introduced the first developer diary and explained that he had worked on the project after handing over Hearts of Iron IV. The official pages consistently use the same developer and publisher attribution.
The connection to earlier Paradox games describes the team's experience, not a claim that Afterworld copies their rules. Official material calls the new game a full Grand Strategy Game with settlement and survival influences. Its closest distinguishing feature is the progression from a handful of survivors to a continent-spanning political power.
A new original setting
Afterworld takes place after the Fall, a world-spanning conflict that occurred in a technologically advanced future. Roughly a century later, surviving groups occupy a transformed North America and compete for the remaining technology and resources. The world has an established history, characters and factions, while the apocalypse changes parts of each campaign for replayability.
Dan Lind said the team wanted a darker, grittier setting that could explore people under extreme pressure. The design mixes a familiar continent with altered geography, ruins and semi-procedural placement of resources, tribes and threats. This gives the game a recognizable foundation without making each campaign identical.
Design direction
Paradox's official overview begins with Origins such as bunker-dwelling shelterfolk and wandering zealots. Players scavenge food, water and fuel, establish settlements and rediscover technology based on exploration. A dynamic Ideas Tree connects what a society learns to what it actually experiences.
Political systems grow alongside the economy. Players decide how scarce goods are allocated, who participates in leadership and what the nation believes. Other groups can be traded with, absorbed or attacked, while pre-Fall technology and the Ancients create strategic pressure beyond ordinary expansion.
Paradox scale with a closer view
The first developer diary compares Afterworld's secondary genre with the way other Paradox games combine grand strategy with war games, role-playing, economics or 4X design. Afterworld draws from settlement and survival games. Its early resource gathering and environmental danger are intended to scale into grand-strategy systems.
The game also operates at a closer level than a galaxy-spanning title. Paradox highlights truck-convoy raids, skirmishes and small squads led through underground bunkers. The campaign can still involve similar strategic complexity, but it keeps individuals, equipment and local survival visible.
Official channels
Paradox hosts an official game page with the trailer, screenshots, feature overview and interactive map. The game also has official Discord and social links, a Steam community hub and Paradox newsletter registration. These sources should be used for new release or feature information.
The website offers a digital comic called The Report as a newsletter sign-up bonus, according to the captured official page. That item is separate from the game purchase and does not establish a release date or edition. Steam still lists the game as coming with a date to be announced.
