Gameplay & Systems
Overview
Afterworld begins at the scale of a small survivor band and grows into continent-wide grand strategy. Its systems unlock progressively: early decisions focus on shelter, basic supplies and exploration, before settlements, laws, convoys, diplomacy and warfare turn the tribe into a larger political power.
| System | Confirmed feature | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Survival | Food, water and fuel | Scarcity shapes migration and expansion. |
| Society | Laws and government | Your choices define the tribe you build. |
| Technology | Dynamic Ideas Tree | Discoveries emerge from exploration and events. |
| Strategy | War and diplomacy | Alliances and conquest both reshape the continent. |
Survival and resources
Food, water and fuel are the foundation of every campaign. Settlements consume supplies, expeditions need equipment, and expansion creates new logistical pressure. The map contains salvage, fertile land and other points of interest, but their distribution changes between campaigns.
Resource priorities let a tribe focus workers on its most urgent needs. Raw materials can be processed through buildings into grain, flour, tools, weapons and other useful goods.
Settlements and convoys
Survivors begin with a modest settlement and a limited number of building slots. Outposts extend control into nearby territories and can specialize around local resources. Convoys later connect the growing network, moving food, water, scrap and other supplies between communities.
Migration is a strategic tool rather than a failure state: a tribe may move to healthier land, escape radiation or reach a more valuable region.
Ideas Tree
Afterworld does not treat technology as a fixed historical ladder. Exploration, encounters and the people you meet reveal branches of a dynamic Ideas Tree. A campaign shaped by agriculture can develop differently from one defined by conflict, isolation or contact with the Ancients.
Ideas can unlock buildings, production methods and social possibilities. The system links research directly to the history your tribe experiences.
Laws and society
Government forms, laws and social classes determine how the tribe is organized. Elites, citizens, an underclass and thralls may have different needs, while trust, security, health and inspiration describe the settlement's condition.
Political choices can range from education and labor rules to darker questions about survival. Paradox describes the goal as building the society of your dreams—or your nightmares.
War and diplomacy
Other tribes can be traded with, influenced, attacked or conquered. Military groups use equipment and can adopt different approaches to battle. At the same time, tribute, alliances and political obligations mean power is not measured by combat alone.
The immortal Ancients represent forces far beyond a new tribe's starting strength. Relationships with them may determine which vision of the old world survives.
Multiplayer
Steam lists single-player, Online PvP and Online Co-op. Detailed player limits and campaign rules have not yet been announced. Steam Workshop support is also confirmed.
